Independent Federal Member for Indi Helen Haines has backed recommendations of a parliamentary inquiry into regional mobile phone coverage.

As a midwife and academic who researched maternal-child outcomes, and remembering my own experience in returning to the workforce and balancing work and care, I know the importance of support for parents in those early years.  

It’s a privilege to rise today to express gratitude for the life and to lament the loss of our much loved and admired colleague and friend Peta Murphy, the member for Dunkley.

As legislators, we should come to this decision with our eyes wide open. This bill, the Australian Citizenship Amendment (Citizenship Repudiation) Bill 2023, is allowing judges, not the executive, to repudiate citizenship in the event a dual citizen commits a serious offence.

Today, I am raising the voices of more than 2,000 regional Australians who have added their name to this petition calling on the Prime Minister to back my Bill.

This bill should embed evidence in decision-making processes and therefore should make a substantive difference in the lives of people who rely on government support payments.

We need constructive solutions to deliver positive outcomes for all Australians, and I’m working hard to do just this, by listening to my constituents and working with communities and experts at all levels of government to shift Australia onto the path of a renewable energy transition done right.

I can’t continue to support government contingent motions that ask us to rush through legislation with the narrowest opportunity to engage with the legislation in any meaningful way.
