MEDIA STATEMENT
Helen Haines has today outlined an economic recovery plan for Indi focussed on investment in roads, rail, telecommunications and support for industries like tourism, healthcare and agriculture.
The Independent Federal Member for Indi has published her submission to the upcoming Federal Budget, set to be handed down on 11th May.
Compiled together with the 9 local government areas in Indi, the Indi Budget Submission sets out the economic priorities across the electorate. Dr Haines said she hopes to see the Federal Budget reflect the local economic priorities.
In last year’s Budget, Indi was successful in securing funding for the restoration of the Mt Buffalo Chalet as well as millions in funding for local roads.
This year, Indi has already secured its first Budget win, the Government announcing it will provide $2.6 million for a new fibre optic cable through the High Country – a project that Dr Haines and the Alpine Shire backed in the Budget Submission.
The full submission details dozens of shovel-ready projects to build the regional tourism sector, new infrastructure projects like the Benalla-Whitfield Road upgrade, and greater investment in new mobile phone towers and locally-owned renewable energy.
It also calls for a significant investment in new facilities for Albury-Wodonga Health including new dedicated Women and Children’s Wing, and a community mental health hub.
